“Tulip”, “flute” or “goblet”?

All these three types of glasses are designed for champagne and sparkling wines in general, but at the same time, they differ markedly in shape. Which one to choose?

Hence the question: how does each of these glasses affect the taste and aroma, and – most importantly – which option would be the best choice?

Cup it is called more in the books. People often just call it “saucer”. This glass has a wide and shallow bowl, and this is the oldest of all glasses for champagne, popular in the early 20th century.

Its continued popularity is due, to a large extent, to the frequency of flickering as an image of a classic suite. It is associated with certain eras and deliberate luxury: parties in the style of the Great Gatsby, the “Underground Empire” or the beau monde of the 60s, when champagne “saucers” were also in fashion.

A glass “cup” is undoubtedly a vintage attribute, a reflection of a style roaming through time. But today its popularity is noticeably inferior to glasses like “flute”. Why it happens?

The fact is that the glass “saucer” came into use as the optimal champagne glass, popular in that era – at the beginning of the 20th century – and then they drank mostly sweet champagne.

Nowadays, this design is not popular because it is not able to reveal the merits of the champagne as we know and love it today.

The shape of the “cup” is such that the drink comes in contact with that part of the tongue that is more sensitive to the sour taste, and for super-dry modern wines from Champagne this is superfluous. In addition, the shallow bowl does not give the bubbles how to break up, and a large area of ??contact with air leads to the fact that the champagne is quickly exhaled. Therefore, if you love your champagne sparkling and vigorous, then you will have to drink it from the saucer rather quickly.

If you are fascinated by this form, the glass “cup” will serve as an elegant saucer for desserts.

Summary: a glass “saucer” is suitable for stylized parties, but not the best option if you want to enjoy the champagne itself.

Glass “flute”

Champagne “flute” – this is a modern icon of sparkling style. Externally, this is a tall, narrow bowl on a long or middle leg – a form that most of our contemporaries closely associate with celebrations and special occasions.

If you like sparkling to play, then such a glass will provide you with slender rows of bubbles rising from the very bottom and from the surface of the walls. Bubbles effectively collect and release a bouquet of drink, while they themselves look spectacular.

Compared with the “saucer”, the “flute” presents sparkling wine much more brightly, forming more bubbles that quickly rush to the surface and come into play with our sense of smell.

At the same time, the small surface of the wine does not allow us to collect a large number of flavors for us and fully reveal the bouquet of the drink. For young wines, this is not a problem. But for a more mature, more complex wine, you need a glass, which will give it more space to demonstrate the true character of purebred champagne.

Summary: the “flute” glass is ideal for most modern dry sparkling wine, like prosecco, but not very suitable for expensive, seasoned champagne, which needs more space to express itself.

Tulip glass

The elegant “tulip” is not so common and is known as “saucer” and “flute”, but it can offer much more to real connoisseurs of “high” sparkling ones.

Its shape is similar to a flute, but with a larger bowl, expanding in the middle and tapering slightly at the top (like an undecided tulip bud).

Just like the “flute”, this glass supports the active play of bubbles, but due to its shape, does not beat them in the nose, but gives the taste to the right parts of the tongue.

A wider bowl has the advantage of giving more wine space to open, which means it gives most of the flavors to appear. The constriction of the upper part collects all these aromas in a bouquet, which we breathe with pleasure at every sip. If samples of expensive champagne occur in your menu, then tulip glasses will present them more favorably than ordinary flutes.

Summary: “Tulip” – an unequivocal choice for sophisticated and seasoned sparkling.

Speaking of ideal compatibility wines with food in general, two most successful options can be noted: a) champagne and food are ideally combined in their characteristics and seem to melt into each other; b) everything works in contrast, i.e. characteristics are opposite, but complement each other perfectly. Again, a classic example is black caviar. For its fatty and brackish taste, champagne adds acid and freshness. A spoon of caviar – a sip of Krug, another of caviar – more champagne … Endless pleasure: you take one sip with bubbles – and your palate is again ready to accept the caviar. To achieve the perfect balance of balance between champagne and caviar, full-bodied wine should be served, which maintains its salty taste.
